Medical and Dental Practice Waste: What a Commercial Bin Service Covers, and What It Never Should

A GP clinic, dental surgery or allied health practice runs three or four different waste streams, and only some of them belong in a commercial wheelie bin. Getting the split right is the whole compliance job: clinical waste in the wrong bin is a serious breach, but paying clinical-waste rates for reception rubbish is money burned every week.

Here is the honest division of labour.

Stream 1: clinical waste. Licensed carrier only, never a wheelie bin

Sharps, contaminated dressings and swabs, pathology waste, pharmaceutical waste, extracted teeth, anything soaked in bodily fluids: this is regulated clinical waste in every state and territory. It must be stored in dedicated labelled containers and collected by a licensed clinical waste operator who issues manifests.

Stream 2: sanitary bins. A separate specialist service
